Online audio recording guide

Which recording formats are available?

Your browser decides the native MediaRecorder format. This page checks what it can actually create before recording, then can export the local result as MP3, WAV, or FLAC.

WebM · Opus

Common in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Efficient for voice recordings.

Ogg · Opus

An efficient open format commonly available in Firefox and some Chromium browsers.

M4A · AAC

Common in Safari and Apple workflows for convenient playback.

MP3 / WAV / FLAC

Exported locally with MediaBunny: MP3 is easy to share; WAV and FLAC are better for editing or archives.

How to record audio online

No desktop software, account, or upload is required.

  1. 01

    Choose a microphone and quality

Pick the system default or a connected microphone, then choose 64, 128, or 192 kbps.

  2. 02

    Allow microphone access

Select Start recording and allow microphone access in your browser permission prompt.

  3. 03

    Record, pause, and resume

Pause for interruptions or to collect your thoughts. The timer only counts audio that is being recorded.

  4. 04

    Preview, convert, and download

Preview the browser-native recording, then export and download MP3, WAV, or FLAC when needed.

Common voice recorder use cases

Voice notes and ideas

Capture tasks, creative ideas, and spoken notes without first sending them to a third-party service.

Meetings, interviews, and lessons

Record clear speech, pause through irrelevant sections, then share a compatible MP3.

Podcast narration and video voice-over

Use a higher quality setting and export WAV or FLAC for a later editing, denoise, or mixing workflow.

Language practice and reading aloud

Record pronunciation repeatedly and listen back immediately for pace, clarity, and level.

Your microphone audio is not uploaded

The browser MediaRecorder writes the recording directly to memory on this device. When you convert it, MediaBunny runs in a local Web Worker; audio is never sent to MediaKit servers. Deleting a recording or closing the page releases its local URL and data.

FAQ

Online audio recorder FAQ

Are recordings uploaded to a server?

No. The microphone stream, recording, and conversion stay in this browser on this device.

Why can’t I see my microphone name?

Browsers commonly show device labels only after you allow microphone access. Check that the microphone is connected, then refresh the page or device list.

Why can’t I start recording?

Recording needs HTTPS, a secure browser context, and modern MediaRecorder support. Allow the microphone in the address bar and check system privacy settings.

Which export format should I use?

MP3 is best for sharing and most players. WAV is uncompressed for editing. FLAC is lossless and smaller than WAV for archives. Keep the original recording when possible.

Will pausing lose what I already recorded?

No. Resuming appends new audio to the same recording, and the paused time is excluded from the timer.

Do long recordings affect performance?

Native browser recording stays lightweight. Converting a long recording to MP3, WAV, or FLAC needs more memory and time, so keep the page open.
