Audio dynamics and clipping FAQ

Are my audio files uploaded?

No. The file is read and analyzed in the current browser on your device; it is not uploaded to MediaKit.

What does dBFS mean?

dBFS means decibels relative to digital full scale. 0 dBFS is the maximum representable digital sample level, so values are normally negative.

Does a clipping warning always mean audible distortion?

Not always, but adjacent samples close to 0 dBFS can indicate flattening and may sound distorted. Listen at the marked position and keep the original file.

What is a good dynamic range?

There is no universal target. Speech, modern mastered music, classical music, and broadcast material use different ranges. Compare the result with the destination specification and your listening judgment.

Why can a supported file fail to open?

A filename extension does not guarantee its internal codec is supported by your browser. Try a recent browser or first convert the file to MP3, WAV, or M4A.

Does this tool change my audio?

No. This page only analyzes the file. The optional JSON download contains calculated metrics, not the source audio.
