What does trimming a video do?
Trimming removes unwanted time from the start or end of a clip. It is useful when a recording contains a few seconds of setup, a long outro, or an accidental moment before the real action begins. Trimming is different from cropping: trimming changes time, while cropping changes the visible frame.
You can trim a video in your browser when you need a short clip for a message, presentation, social post, or upload. The tool can work with common formats such as MP4, MOV, and WebM. For supported files, the media is processed locally on your device instead of being sent to a remote upload service.
How to cut a video in three steps
- Add the original video to the video trimmer. Keep a copy of the source if it is important; trimming creates a new file.

Frame-accurate trimming decodes and re-encodes the affected section. It takes longer, but it is the better choice when a cut must happen immediately before a spoken word, on a music beat, or at a specific animation frame. Always preview the first and last seconds of the exported clip because players can display keyframe-based cuts differently.
Does trimming reduce video quality?
Not necessarily. A stream-copy trim can avoid another generation of compression when the container and codec allow it. A precise trim may re-encode the selected range, which can introduce a small quality change. If the clip looks soft or the file is much larger than expected, compress the video after trimming with a quality setting suited to its destination.
Avoid repeatedly opening and exporting the same lossy file. A better workflow is:
- keep the camera original as an archive;
- make one clean trim from that original;
- resize or compress the delivery copy only once;
- check the final audio and video before deleting the intermediate file.
Common trimming mistakes
- Cutting too close to speech: leave a small amount of room around words and breaths.
- Confusing trim with crop: use video crop when the problem is a distracting edge or an incorrect aspect ratio.
- Ignoring the audio track: confirm that sound starts and ends with the picture.
- Exporting the wrong format: MP4 is a safe sharing choice; WebM can be efficient for websites.
- Overwriting the source: save the result under a new filename so the original remains available.
