How to split an image into a nine-grid

Choose an image
Drop a file, browse your device, or paste an image from the clipboard. You can also try the sample. Limits: 50 MB, 48 megapixels, and 16,384 pixels on either side.

Set the grid and framing
Start with 3 rows × 3 columns, choose 2×2 or a three-panel strip, or set 1–6 rows and 1–6 columns. Keep the full image, or center-crop to square tiles.

Choose a format and size, then download individual numbered tiles or a ZIP. Filenames include row and column positions for easy organization.

HEIC, TIFF, SVG, and PDF are not directly supported. Convert them to PNG or JPG first.

Image splitting and posting tips
Make every tile square
Select “Square tiles”. The tool center-crops to the grid’s aspect ratio and gives every tile the same integer pixel side length. If your subject is off-center, adjust the composition in the crop tool first.
Plan the posting order
Normal numbers run from top left to bottom right. If your platform places the newest post at the top left, choose “Reverse numbering” and publish in the preview’s numbered order: 1, 2, 3… Pinning, reordering, and platform cropping can change the final mosaic.
Balance clarity and file size
Original size preserves the pixel dimensions of the cropped region. The 1080 and 2048 options cap each tile’s longest edge, only reducing size, never enlarging. Use PNG for text and transparency, and JPG for photographs.
How are your images handled?
This tool reads, crops, and encodes images inside your browser without uploading originals or tiles to a server. No account is needed for processing. Replacing the image, starting over, or leaving the page releases temporary image resources held by the tool. Downloaded files remain on your device. Normal network requests for the website and its scripts still occur.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free, and are there watermarks?
The tool is free, needs no sign-up, and does not add watermarks to exported tiles.
Does splitting reduce image quality?
Keeping the full image at original size does not resize it. PNG uses lossless encoding. JPG and WebP re-encode at your chosen quality and may change pixel colors. Browsers may also convert the color space.
What if the dimensions are not divisible by 3?
Full-image mode uses integer boundaries. Tiles can differ by one pixel in width or height, and every source pixel is covered. Square-tile mode crops excess edges to produce exactly equal squares.
Why did my transparent background turn white?
JPG cannot store transparency. It fills transparent areas with the selected background color, white by default. Choose PNG or browser-supported WebP to retain transparency.
Can I split animated GIFs or iPhone HEIC photos?
GIF and other animated images export only their first frame. HEIC is not directly supported; convert it to JPG or PNG before splitting.
What if an image will not load or export?
Check the input format. Resize images above 50 MB, 48 megapixels, or 16,384 pixels on either side. Limited browser memory can also cause failures; try a smaller original or close other memory-heavy tabs. Choose PNG if WebP export is unavailable.
How are the files ordered in the ZIP?
Filenames begin with a two-digit number and include r for row and c for column. Normal numbering runs from top left to bottom right; reverse numbering starts at bottom right. Reversing numbers does not rearrange the image.
