A private subtitle workflow for everyday files

Convert subtitle files online without changing the timeline

Use this free subtitle converter to move between SRT, WebVTT, ASS, and SSA. Edit the text before export, keep cue timing and line breaks, and download a clean subtitle file for a video player, editor, course, or social media workflow.

Supported subtitle formats

Each format is useful in a slightly different workflow. The converter normalizes timed cues in your browser, then writes the target format from the edited result.

SRT

The most widely supported format

A simple numbered cue format that works with most video players, editors, and subtitle libraries.

WebVTT / VTT

Best for web video

Designed for HTML5 video and web players. It supports cue identifiers and web-friendly timing syntax.

ASS

Advanced styling and positioning

Useful for styled captions, karaoke, signs, and precise positioning. Exported styles use a clean default template.

SSA

Legacy styled subtitles

A compatible format for older subtitle tools. Text and timing are preserved while the file is rebuilt with standard headers.

How to convert a subtitle file

Go from an existing subtitle file to a ready-to-use format in four quick steps.

  1. 01

    Add or paste subtitles

Drop an SRT, VTT, ASS, or SSA file, choose it from your device, or paste subtitle text directly.

  2. 02

    Check the detected format

The tool detects the common format from the file name or its contents. You can change the source format if needed.

  3. 03

    Edit and choose an output

Correct text, line breaks, or cue content, then select the format your player or editor expects.

  4. 04

    Download the converted file

Review the cue count and preview cards, then download the result with the original file name.

Common subtitle conversion scenarios

Converting the file is often the fastest way to make the same captions work in another app or publishing channel.

SRT to VTT for HTML5 video

Convert captions before adding them to a video element, web player, learning platform, or documentation site.

VTT to SRT for editing software

Create a broadly compatible SRT when an editor or desktop player does not accept WebVTT.

ASS or SSA to a clean timed file

Reuse the dialogue and timing in a simpler format when visual styling is not required.

Fix captions before delivery

Make small text and line-break corrections while converting, without opening a full video editor.

Your subtitle file stays on this device

This page performs subtitle parsing and conversion in the browser with ordinary text APIs. No subtitle file is uploaded to a server, and the page does not need FFmpeg or MediaBunny for this text-only workflow. Remove the file or close the tab when you are finished if you want to release the browser memory immediately.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this subtitle converter free?

Yes. You can convert and download subtitle files for free without creating an account.

Which formats can I convert?

The page supports SRT, WebVTT (VTT), ASS, and SSA as both source and output formats.

Will the timing be preserved?

Valid cue start and end times are preserved to the precision supported by the target format. ASS and SSA use centiseconds, while SRT and VTT use milliseconds.

Can I edit subtitles before converting?

Yes. Edit the source text in the left panel. The converted output and cue preview update as you type.

Are ASS styles preserved in SRT or VTT?

No. SRT and VTT carry timed text rather than visual styling. Formatting tags are cleaned so the exported captions remain readable.

Why does my file show no valid cues?

Check that every cue has a start time, an end time, and text. For SRT/VTT use a line such as 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000; ASS/SSA files need Dialogue lines.

Can I convert subtitles on a phone?

Yes, if the mobile browser supports file selection and clipboard access. Larger files are more comfortable to edit on a desktop keyboard.

Does this create subtitles from speech?

No. It converts existing timed text. Use a speech-to-text tool first when the video does not already have a subtitle file.
