Screen recording guide
Record your screen online without installing software
This free screen recorder captures your screen, a window, or a browser tab directly in the browser. Add microphone narration, system audio when supported, or a camera picture-in-picture overlay. The recording and format conversion stay on your device.
Supported recording formats
The recorder checks MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported() in the current browser and only shows formats it can actually create. Direct MP4 recording is browser-dependent; WebM is the usual fallback.
WebM · VP8 / VP9 + Opus
The most common browser-native recording format. It is usually available in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox and keeps files relatively small.
MP4 · H.264 + AAC
The most compatible format for phones, editing apps, presentations, and sharing. Direct recording depends on the browser and operating system.
Local MediaBunny conversion
If your browser records WebM, convert the finished recording to MP4 or WebM in a Worker without sending the file to a server.
How to record a screen
A focused workflow for demos, tutorials, lessons, and private screen capture.
- 01
Choose what to share
Click Start recording and choose the entire screen, a window, or a browser tab in the native picker.
- 02
Pick video and audio options
Use screen-only mode for a clean capture, or enable the microphone, system audio, and camera overlay when needed.
- 03
Pause and finish
Pause between sections. Sharing can also be stopped from the browser or operating system; the tool will finish the recording automatically.
- 04
Preview and download
Preview the local result, download the browser-native file, or convert it to MP4 or WebM for your next workflow.
Common use cases
A practical recorder for everyday screen capture
Choose the smallest source that tells the story. Sharing a single window or tab usually keeps the recording focused and reduces file size.
Software tutorials
Explain a workflow while capturing the exact window or tab your audience needs to follow.
Product demos and bug reports
Show a reproducible issue, a new feature, or a product walkthrough with optional voice narration.
Online lessons and meetings
Capture a presentation or browser-based lesson, with microphone audio and optional system sound.
Private screen capture
Create a local recording of a dashboard, prototype, or internal process before deciding where to share it.
How privacy works
The browser permission prompt controls access to your screen, camera, and microphone. The streams are assembled into a MediaRecorder Blob locally. Optional MP4 or WebM conversion runs in a local MediaBunny Worker. Nothing is uploaded or stored on our servers. Stop sharing and close the tab when you are finished to release the streams.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Will my screen recording be uploaded?
No. Screen, camera, microphone, preview, and optional MediaBunny conversion stay in this browser tab. This page does not upload the recording.
Why can’t I record system audio?
System audio is controlled by the browser and operating system. Check Share audio in the screen-share picker, and remember that some browsers only offer it for a tab or window.
Why is MP4 unavailable?
MediaRecorder support varies by browser. Record WebM first, then use the local MediaBunny conversion button to create an MP4 when the browser codecs allow it.
Does camera picture-in-picture work everywhere?
The overlay uses Canvas capture. If that API or camera permission is unavailable, the tool falls back to screen recording and explains the fallback in the status message.
What browser is required?
Use a current browser with getDisplayMedia and MediaRecorder support over HTTPS or localhost. Keep the tab open while recording and converting.
How can I reduce file size?
Record only the needed window or tab, keep clips short, avoid unnecessary camera overlay, and compress or trim the result before sharing.
